Frost Injury and Control

Avocado flesh can turn black from exposure to cold. When severe, fruit can develop brown, water-soaked spots in the skin, gray areas in the flesh, and may even crack or split.

Foliage can turn brown and wilt, and scattered limbs or entire trees may die from cold temperatures.

Frost and freezing occur under somewhat different conditions.

Several frost control methods are available.

Test frost control systems by November and apply frost protections when warranted from about November through March, especially if growing on flat land.
