Alyssum—Alyssum spp.
Sweet alyssum—Lobularia spp.
Family Brassicaceae*
Plant Identification
Alyssum spp. are small perennial plants and Lobularia spp. are short trailing annual plants. Flowers bloom in the
spring and are arranged in tight clusters. These plants are
often used in rock gardens or planting borders and attract butterflies. Annual
species tend to reseed themselves if left undisturbed.
*Some species are invasive
weeds. Other species
may be better choices when planting.
Optimum conditions for growth
Alyssum and sweet alyssum do best in areas with
full sun, although they can tolerate a little shade. They
require a moderate amount of watering. They will do well
in rocky soil, as long as it has good drainage.
