Worming

You can remove borers through a technique called worming. Remove 6 to 8 inches of soil from around the trunk and peel back the bark to observe the burrows. Use a pocketknife or some other pointed instrument to dig the larvae out. Be careful; it is possible to injure the tree seriously if too much wood is removed.
