Lygus—Lygus spp.
Lygus bugs, family Miridae, feed on many different broadleaf
plants and the fruit of trees. Lygus hesperus is the
most common species. Adults are green, straw yellow, or brown
with a conspicuous yellow or pale green triangle on the back.
Lygus bug eggs are inserted into plant tissue and are not
easily observed.
Lygus bug feeding causes discolored bumps or depressions
on fruit, but without the white pithy areas beneath that
are characteristic of stink bug feeding. Lygus bugs are most
likely to damage fruit when nearby herbaceous vegetation
on which they feed dries up or is cut, prompting the bugs
to move into trees. |
