Diagnostic key to problems in turfgrass

This key can help you to diagnose common insect or disease problems that may be occurring in your lawn. Use this key only after you have considered the possibility that your problem may be caused by an abiotic disorder or by poor management practices.

Step 1: Choose your turf species

Most lawns are mixtures of various grass species. Select the species of a grass plant on which you see symptoms. For help in identifying your turfgrass species, refer to the turfgrass key.

The diagnostic key covers only the major turfgrass problems seen on the primary turfgrass species grown throughout California. For a more complete list of pests and disorders that may occur on turfgrass, refer to the following sections:
